Ashiana Humanitarian Network Limited was incorporated on 8 March 2022, International Women’s Day. This was an auspicious beginning for the organisation, which is committed to peace, justice, health and sustainable development for refugees, asylum seekers, humanitarian entrants and their families, and for related communities in their homelands.

The organisation is the culmination of work done voluntarily and pro bono by its founding directors, Dr Mary Nangrahary, Robery Lindsay, Farid Popal and Marian Lamattina, over many years with refugees, asylum seekers and humanitarian entrants in Australia. Their vision is to build an organisation that is led by and partners with the communities it aims to serve. Today, we are witnessing the humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and Ukraine which continue to worsen, and know that many refugees, asylum seekers and humanitarian entrants in Australia still face uncertainty and a lack of enduring, humane solutions to enable them to thrive.

In this context, a community driven, independent, not-for-profit organisation based in Western Australia which listens to and supports their agency and capacity to create a peaceful home for their families in Australia, and through its network, supports sustainable development for the many millions left behind in their homelands, is still needed.

Our first actions as an organisation have been to establish the plans and internal processes to enable our organisation to pursue its mission effectively. We have also been growing the membership among the Western Australian community, some of whom share the experiences of refugees, and others who have relevant skills to contribute, but all of whom are committed to the mission of the organisation and its values.

As 20 June 2022, International Refugee Day approaches, we encourage all of you to honour the courage of those who are forced to flee their homelands and everything and everyone they know in the hope of safety and security for them and their family members, and to do what you can to support their journey to find a new home.
